The death of Samuel is announced in one brief verse only (1 Samuel 25:1). Israel's great judge, prophet and priest was no more. Although his death came at a time when the monarchical institution he had constituted looked desperately unstable and its future uncertain, it is worth noting that the Lord prolonged the old man's life until Saul had publicly acknowledged David's right to rule in his place. (1 Samuel 24:20). In the eyes of God, no death is untimely.
