Taming The Tongue: Purifying Our Communication
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” — Ephesians 4:29
The theme for the 2019 rally is one whose importance and relevance is not lost to our minds. One of the gifts God has given to humanity is the ability to communicate; the ability to verbally communicate with fellow humans in a distinct and clear language. We use words from a known language to relay messages to one or more people, and such speech serves as a vehicle for expressing desires, ideas, feelings, and opinions. Our communication can be used to inform, inquire, argue and discuss topics of all kinds, and to form bonds and build relationships with other people.
But as fallen creatures, this vital God-given ability to use our tongues can be marred with sin. Our tongues which can be used for the glory of God and for the blessing of others may also be misused, and bring sorrow and tears to others. Hurtful words, angry words, impatient words, unloving words, harsh words, cruel words – they are a window into the true state of our hearts (Luke 6:45). And because of the enormous harm that words can inflict, and the fact that we all shall give an account for every careless word we speak, it is important that we learn to tame our tongues.
It is our hope and prayer that the transforming power of God’s grace and His sanctifying Spirit will purify our communication to the glory of His name, and to the building up of others (Ephesians 4:29). God bless you!
