When what we prayed for from the Lord delays, Satan immediately steps in, offering us deceptive shortcuts that seem at first sight to bring us to the same answer. For Abraham and Sarah, as the years of waiting dragged on, Satan presented the shortcut of Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant (Gen. 16). It seemed human wisdom a practical way of bringing about the desired result. The result, however, was disaster. Ishmael was not the same as Isaac.
